Home Learning

The children have written out the spelling words they are learning in their Homework jotters. One way to practise learning to spell words is Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check. Ideally, they should do this over a few days to help build up their confidence writing the word. The children might want to fold the page in quarters to enable them to cover the word before writing it.

Words for this week are:-

Group 1 – pig, gap, dig, dog, got, mug

Group 2 – chop, chin, chat, church, much, such

Group 3 – quick, square, queen, quarter, quilt, question

Your child might want to choose one of their words and write a sentence with it, to practise their writing skills.

Children should also be involved in reading activities each day. As well, as reading the book, they could ask and answer questions about the book, and discuss what the story is about.

We are working on our numbers to 30/50/100. Your child can practise counting forward and backward from a given number. It is particularly good to practise going over a ten, as this involves changing both digits.

In Literacy, your child will receive their new reading book on Monday or Tuesday. They should practise reading the book with you. They can discuss what happens in the story and practise re-telling the story to you. We will be working on our letter formation, and also practising writing a sentence using a capital letter and a full stop correctly.

In Numeracy, we will continue looking at numbers up to 30/50/100 with children thinking about the number before, after and between. We will practise counting forwards and backwards from different starting numbers.

Homework will start this week and will be given out on Friday. It will be collected in on the following Thursday. Initially, it will take the form of spelling which the children can practise. I will add a list of different spelling activities you could do with your child to help them learn their words. The children will continue to have reading to practise every day.

This week our PE will be on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, so could children have their PE kit on each of these days. We are practising throwing and catching a ball.

In HWB we have been looking at the key to being a good friend and this week we will look at different ways they children can use to resolve any of their differences. We are all looking at how we are all different but special in our own way.

Looking forward to a busy week in P2.

I

A small request

We now have 3 time slots for PE (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) and a lot of children are in the Running Club on Thursday too. We have also had a warmer spell of weather again, which encourages children to remove jumpers and jackets too. Could I ask that you label all items of clothing your child will be changing out of, plus, everything they are changing into. This includes indoor shoes, outdoor shoes and gym shoes. It is amazing where some things can be found. It will make things easier to return the item to its’ rightful owner.

Thank you to all of you who have already done this.

Another busy week ahead.

Due to a couple of timetable changes, the children will be receiving new reading books on Tuesday this week. Our Assembly is now on Monday afternoons and we have 4 half hour PE slots – one being on Monday. The others are on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Most children have brought in their PE kit in a named bag which they can keep in school. If your child has not got one in school could you please send one in.

In Literacy we will continue to look at prediction and asking the children to discuss what they think will happen in the story. If your child has a non-fiction book, read and discuss the blurb on the back cover with them. In our writing, we are looking at writing in sentences, using a capital letter and full stop. We are looking at spelling words on our common words lists correctly.

In Numeracy, we will be continuing looking at numbers up to 30/50/100. We will counting forward and backward from a given number in the range, and also looking at numbers before, after and between concepts.

Look for a Book

Today, the children have received a letter about the ‘Look for a Book’ scheme, inside a polypocket. This nationwide scheme, publicised on Facebook – #LookforaBookScotland is to encourage children to read more. The plan is for you to hide a book, along with the form stating who has hidden the book, somewhere in your neighbourhood. The lucky finder can keep the book as long as they want, then complete the form and rehide the book.

I would like to start this in Crown. If your child wants to, they can choose a book which they have finished with, and using the polypocket for the book and the completed form, they can bring the book to school. They will be given time to go and hide their book somewhere in school, or the playground. Other classes will also have the opportunity to find these books and hopefully we will encourage the children to read more.

Next week we will be having a busy week.

In Literacy, the children will be receiving their new reading books either on Monday or Tuesday. We will be talking about the book and they will be making predictions about what they think will happen next. We will be revising some phonics and word building from last term.

In Numeracy, we will be counting to 30, 50 or 100, both forwards and backwards. The children will be ordering the numbers and looking for missing numbers in sequences.

In Health and Wellbeing, we are looking at our friendships, and thinking about the qualities which make ‘a good friend.’ We are thinking about the similarities and differences between us. We are linking this with our Friendship topic using the stories of Winnie the Pooh. These stories illustrate how different the friends are, but also how they care for and help each other. I have asked the children to bring in any related Winnie the Pooh items. Could I ask that you name any item your child brings in, to ensure it’s safe return.

In PE, which will be on Wednesday afternoons, we will be working on increasing our stamina through our Daily 10 activities. We will practise our throwing and catching skills with both large and small balls.
